The Motivational Roller Coaster🎢: Embracing the Lows, Riding the Highs, and Why Motivation is Like a Daily Shower🚿
Wouldn't it be great if we could wake up every morning feeling supercharged and ready to seize the day? Neverending motivation, helping you to chase your dreams at top speed. Unfortunately, for most of us, the real path of motivation is often made up of highs and lows, more like a roller coaster than a rocket. But that's part of the thrill!
The truth is, you're not always going to feel like a motivational powerhouse all the time. As author Zig Ziglar said: "People often say motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing. That's why we recommend it daily." So how do you embrace the lows and ride the highs of motivation, refreshing it daily and truly enjoying the ride? Let's talk about it in today's blog! 🚀🌈
The Roller Coaster of Motivation: Highs and Lows
Think again about a roller coaster for your imagery. The fun of the ride is that it takes you up so high, drops you just as low, and takes you up again. Of course, that's also what scares so many people about roller coasters. There's a feeling of insecurity, feeling unsure where the path will take you - it's too tangled up to see in full. And what if it goes off the track?
But what happens when you actually get the courage to ride the roller coaster? When you embrace the lows as much as you thrill at the highs? What you find is that the whole of the journey is what makes it fun. The variety. The same is true for life. To get the most out of motivation, you have to strap in for the whole ride.🎢🙃
Riding the Highs of Motivation
Those days when you wake up feeling energized are irreplaceable. You feel like you can climb a mountain and conquer the world. You attack your projects with gusto, excited to get to work. You know it won't last, but you want to squeeze as much of it as you can while you have the chance.
So what do you do on those blessed days of high motivation? Here are our suggestions.💪🚿
- Give yourself a buffer. If you have the time and resources, try to get a little bit ahead - on your chores, on work, on your creative pursuits. This gives you a buffer for those lower motivation days.
- Plan ahead. Make a plan for the next day, the next week, or the next month. Whatever you're able to do while you're feeling inspired. This essentially lays the tracks for the lows of the roller coaster ride, so the car keeps moving even at the lowest points.
- Look at what's going right. What sparked that inspiration for you? What made you excited to tackle your work with renewed motivation? Maybe it was a refreshing break or a favorite movie that gave you an idea. Make a note of what motivated you so you can try to replicate it in the future.
- Don't overdo it. It may feel like you can do EVERYTHING on those high motivation days, but the truth is you only have one body, one mind, and 24 hours in the day. So be careful not to burn yourself out by taking too much on in your excitement.
Embracing the Lows of Motivation
Eventually, there comes a point where you'll feel like pulling teeth trying to get work done. Motivation may be hard to find, but there are still things you can learn from these low days:
- Figure out why you're low. Do you feel sluggish from something you ate? Are you sleep deprived? Or maybe you're just blocked on something you're working on, and that makes you dread approaching it. If you can figure out why you don't feel motivated, you might be able to figure out a solution.
- Break down what you can do. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. If you're faced with a daunting task and you really dread it, try breaking it down into smaller tasks! This will give you something manageable to start with and it will make you feel better overall about the other tasks that you have to tackle.
- Take a break if you need it. Remember that caution about overdoing it? That's because when you overdo it on those high moments, you create a lot of work for yourself on future days when you feel less motivated - and that's a one-way ticket to burnout central. So if you're burning yourself out, take a day off - or maybe a weekend. Give yourself time to refresh. You can't pour from an empty cup!
