How to Choose When Everything Sounds Exciting

Most decision advice assumes there is a bad option to eliminate. Weigh the pros and cons. Notice the red flags. Pick the one that holds up.

That is useless to you, because none of your options are bad. They are all interesting, all plausible, and all genuinely appealing, which is exactly why the list never gets shorter.

Excitement is not a signal when everything is exciting

For most people, enthusiasm narrows the field. For you it does the opposite. Everything clears the bar, so the bar tells you nothing, and you end up choosing by whichever thing you thought about most recently.

What you need is a filter that is indifferent to how interesting something is.

Four filters that are not excitement

Which one still sounds good in six months?

New is a powerful flavour and it fades on a predictable schedule. Imagine each option after the novelty has worn off, at the boring middle stage. Some survive that and some do not, and you can usually feel which is which immediately.

Which one am I already partly on the road to?

You have history. Some of these options have three years of quiet groundwork behind them and some are a week old. That is not sentimentality. That is a real head start.

Which one would I be annoyed to see someone else do?

A surprisingly good test. Envy is honest in a way that enthusiasm is not, because it does not care what you would like to be true about yourself.

Which one makes the others easier?

There is often one option that, if it happened, would open two more. It is rarely the flashiest. It is almost always the right first one.

Then make it a season, not a life sentence

The reason choosing feels so heavy is that it sounds permanent. It is not. You are choosing what gets your attention for one stretch of time, after which the list is still there and you know considerably more than you did.

Nothing is being deleted. Something is being scheduled.

Where this happens in the Guidebook

Discover, Decide, Design. The middle word is the one built for you. Momentum Goals is where a long list of good things becomes a short list of chosen ones, measured against your direction rather than against how each one feels on a Tuesday night.
