From Collection to Direction

The books in the drawer are usually treated as evidence of failure. They are better understood as a research file nobody has read.

Somewhere in there is a record of what you have actually wanted, repeatedly, over years, written by you at moments when you were being honest. That is genuinely rare information. Most people have nothing like it.

An hour with the drawer

Take them out. Not to feel anything about them. To collect data.

Write down every goal you find

All of them, in one place, from every book. Do not edit as you go. The list will be shorter than you fear.

Mark the repeats

Anything that appears in more than one book. These are the interesting ones, and there are usually fewer than six.

Sort the repeats into two piles

One pile: things you genuinely want and have never set up properly. The other pile: things you believe you should want and never have. From the inside these look identical, which is exactly why they keep getting rewritten.

The second pile can be retired. Permanently, with something close to relief. They have been taking up room for years without ever being chosen.

Look at when you stopped

Dates, if the books have them. Was it always February? Always after something specific? That is your pattern, and it is more useful than any new system.

What you have at the end

A short list of things that have survived several years of your own attention, and one clear pattern about when you stop. That is a starting point no new notebook could have given you, and it was in the drawer the whole time.

Then, and only then, choose a book

With something real to put in it, the choice of book becomes what it should have been all along: a pleasure rather than a strategy.
