From Someday to First Step
There is a particular hope that keeps a dream in the someday category, and it is rarely said out loud.
The hope is that at some point the feeling will become strong enough to carry you. That one morning you will wake up and simply know, and the knowing will come with instructions.
It is a reasonable thing to expect, because that is how inspiration is usually described. It is also not how it works.
What inspiration is actually for
Inspiration is a sorting mechanism. It tells you what matters to you, reliably and often, and that is genuinely valuable information that many people do not have.
What it does not do is sequence anything. It has no opinion about order, timing, or what happens first. Waiting for it to produce a plan is like waiting for a compass to draw you a route. Wrong instrument, no fault of the instrument.
Three moves that turn wonder into motion
Catch it while it is here
Keep a running note of the moments the feeling arrives. What you were doing, what you were looking at, what it was about. Over a few weeks a pattern emerges that is far more specific than the feeling itself, and the pattern is actionable in a way the feeling never is.
Write it down badly
Stargazers often keep the big picture unwritten because writing it makes it look small and ordinary on the page. It will. Write it anyway. A dream you can see is a dream you can aim at, and one that lives only in your head stays permanently out of reach because it never has edges.
Choose a first step you would be slightly embarrassed to call a step
That is the correct size. If it feels significant, it is too big, and it will be postponed for the same reasons everything else has been.
What changes once something has started
The dream stops being a source of quiet guilt and becomes a thing you are actually doing, badly, at the beginning, which is how everything is at the beginning.
And the wondering does not stop. It keeps producing ideas, as it always has. It just now has somewhere to put them.
