Small, Safe First Steps
The advice aimed at people who overthink is almost always some version of leap. Take the plunge. Burn the boats. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
That advice was written for a different person. For you it does not read as inspiring, it reads as reckless, and you are correct to distrust it.
There is a third option between leaping and waiting
A step that is genuinely small. Not a euphemism for a leap. Actually small, chosen so that being wrong about it costs you an afternoon.
This is not a compromise. It is how careful people have always moved, and it works particularly well for you because it produces the one thing you most respond to: information.
What makes a step safe
You can stop
There is a clear point at which you could reverse it, and you know where that point is before you begin.
It costs one unit of something you can spare
One afternoon. One conversation. One small amount of money you have already decided you are willing to lose.
It returns a fact
Something you did not know before, that you could not have learned by reading. If the step does not do this, it is not the right step.
Nobody is depending on it yet
Do not make the first step the one where you have already told everyone. That converts a small step into a large one without changing what it actually involves.
A worked example
You are considering a significant change of direction in your work. The leap is quitting. The wait is another six months of research.
The safe step is one conversation with one person who has already done it, with three questions written down in advance. It costs an hour. It cannot be held against you. And it will tell you more than the last three months of reading did.
Then stack them
Safe steps compound. Five of them, taken over a couple of months, will get you further than either the leap or the wait, and at no point will you have done anything you could not undo. That is not timid. That is navigation.
