The Joy of a Shorter List
Before you try it, a shorter list feels like giving things up. That is the whole reason it does not happen.
After you try it, something unexpected shows up, and almost nobody warns you about it in advance.
The thing nobody mentions
A long list is not just a set of tasks. It is a set of open questions, each one quietly running in the background. Should I be doing that instead? Am I falling behind on the other one? Is this the right thing to be spending this evening on?
Every unmade decision costs something continuously. Six open options are six small, permanent drains, and they run whether or not you are working.
Cut the list and those close. That is the relief people describe and struggle to explain. It is not that there is less to do. It is that there is less to decide.
What else comes back
Actual free time
Not time you spent on the other five things, because you were barely spending time on them. Time you spent thinking about them, feeling behind on them, and reorganising them.
The feeling of finishing
Which you may not have had in a while. Finishing is the only thing that proves the whole approach works, and it is unavailable to anyone running six things at a fifth of the necessary pace.
Interest in the rest of your life
People are often surprised that a shorter goal list makes them more present everywhere else. It follows, though. The background process was using the same attention.
How to try it without committing
Pick one season. Twelve weeks. Choose two things, write the rest on a list titled "after", and put that list where you can see it so nothing feels lost.
Then judge the experiment on two questions at the end. How much moved? And how did the twelve weeks feel?
Our guess, and it is a guess worth testing on yourself, is that the second answer surprises you more than the first.
