When Someday Quietly Becomes Never

There is a particular item on your list that has been there a long time.

You have not abandoned it. If someone asked, you would say you are definitely going to do it. You just have not done it, and you did not do it last year either, and the year before that you also meant to.

That item is in the process of quietly changing category, from a plan into a thing you used to want. The change never announces itself.

Why comfort is so good at this

Comfort is not the enemy. It is a real and underrated thing to have built, and most advice about change treats it as an obstacle to be overcome, which is both rude and wrong.

But comfort has one blind spot: it does not distinguish between what is worth protecting and what is worth outgrowing. It protects everything equally, including the version of your life that you have quietly outgrown.

So the thing that would require a small amount of disruption keeps losing, every time, to the thing that requires none. Not because you chose it. Because nothing forced the comparison.

Force the comparison once

Ask the ten-year question, not the want question

Want is a weak signal when your life is already good. Try this instead: if this is still on the list in ten years, would that bother me? Most items produce a shrug. One will not.

Give it a date, not a plan

Not a full plan. A date by which the first small thing will have happened. Someday has no date, which is the entire reason it works the way it does.

Tell one person

Not for accountability pressure. For the same reason you write something down: to move it out of the place where things quietly expire.

What this is not asking of you

It is not asking you to want a different life. You have looked at the alternatives and you like yours. The question is only whether one particular thing gets to stay a plan or gets to become a regret, and that is a decision worth making on purpose rather than by default.
