How to Decide Without Being Sure
You are waiting to feel sure. It is a reasonable thing to wait for, and it is not coming, and that is not a flaw in you.
Most of the certainty attached to any decision is produced by making it. The information that would settle the question only becomes available on the other side.
Sort by reversibility first
Before anything else, ask what it would cost to undo.
Undoable in a week
These deserve minutes, not weeks. Trying is cheaper than deliberating, and you can stop.
Undoable, but expensively
These deserve real thought, bounded. A day, or a week, decided in advance.
Genuinely hard to undo
Rare. Take your time here with a clear conscience. This is what your carefulness is for.
The trouble is that from the inside, all three feel like the third. Sorting them on paper breaks that spell more reliably than any reassurance.
Set the certainty threshold in advance
Pick a number before the topic gets emotional. Seventy percent is a reasonable default for most reversible things. When you reach it, you move. Not because you feel ready. Because you decided in advance that this was the condition, and you trust the version of yourself who set it.
Without a threshold, there is no stopping rule, and research expands to fill whatever time is available.
Two questions that cut through
What would I need to see to decide?
Name it specifically. Often, once named, it turns out to be unknowable, which is useful: you can stop looking for it.
What is the cost of the delay?
Deliberating feels free. It is not. Count the weeks you have already spent, and add the weeks you would spend to reach certainty, and compare that to the cost of being wrong on something reversible.
The permission that matters
Your first answer does not have to be your final answer. That line is written into The Compass Guidebook deliberately, because for a certain kind of careful person it is the entire unlock. You were never going to move while a wrong answer was permanent.
