Progress Beats Perfection, in Practice

"Progress over perfection" is one of those phrases that everybody nods at and nobody can act on, because it describes an attitude rather than a procedure.

Telling a careful person to care less has never worked. What does work is giving the carefulness somewhere specific to go.

Put the perfectionism on a leash, not in a cage

Your standards are an asset. The problem is that they are currently applied evenly across everything, including the parts where nobody benefits from them.

So sort the work before you start it.

Where it has to be right

The small number of places where getting it wrong is expensive or hard to reverse. Spend your standards here. All of them.

Where it has to be done

Everything else. The threshold here is functional, not excellent, and treating it as excellent is not diligence, it is misallocation.

Most people who feel stuck are applying a "has to be right" standard to a "has to be done" category, usually without noticing.

Three procedures that make this real

Version it

Call the first attempt a first version out loud, in writing, before you begin. A first version can be finished. A thing can only be perfect, which means it can only be unfinished.

Time-box the polish, not the work

Give the improving phase a fixed length. Forty minutes. When the timer goes, it ships in whatever state it is in. This sounds arbitrary because it is, and it works for the same reason.

Ship one thing below your standard on purpose

Once. Something low stakes. Then watch what actually happens, which in almost every case is nothing. That single piece of evidence is worth more than any amount of reassurance.

What you get back

Not lower quality. More finished things, which is the only way quality ever compounds. A Cartographer who finishes ten things learns ten times more about the terrain than one who perfects one, and the eleventh plan is better because of it.
